Pipe Replacement Program
Why we’re replacing pipes
Just like replacing your roof or car tires over time, maintaining a safe, reliable natural gas system means upgrading older parts of the infrastructure. That’s why we’re replacing more than 1,000 miles of cast- and ductile-iron natural gas mains by 2035—pipes that have served their purpose and are ready to be retired.
Benefits of a modern system
Upgrading our natural gas system brings significant safety, performance, and environmental benefits, including:
- Stronger materials – New plastic pipes are flexible and better withstand Chicago’s freeze-thaw cycles and resist corrosion.
- Pressure protection – Over-pressurization controls help regulate gas pressure automatically before it enters your home or business.
- Emergency shut-off access – Valves are accessible 24/7 in case of an emergency.
- Automatic safety features – Excess flow valves automatically shut off gas if flow exceeds safe limits.
- Fewer leaks, fewer emissions – New pipes reduce methane emissions and improve air quality.
- Future-ready infrastructure – Supports clean energy solutions, including hydrogen blends and renewable natural gas.
Out with the old: Removing cast- and ductile-iron mains
View our interactive map to see where aging cast- and ductile-iron mains still exist in our system. Many of these pipes date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s and have reached the end of their useful life.
